I believe that as we work to create light for others, we naturally light our own way.
I have always been passionate about supporting at-risk youth. With over a decade of experience as an educator, I have dedicated my career to amplifying the voices of young people who feel unseen and unheard. After the loss of my son, Isaiah Shepard, I felt a profound calling to continue this mission in his honor.
Our family experienced the impact of a broken system with limited resources and a lack of knowledge. Establishing Hope Above Fear has not only allowed me to help change this narrative for others but has also solidified my purpose in life.

WHY DO YOU VOLUNTEER?
One of the hardest realities of life is the suffering of my fellow community members. With so many people in this world, how can I not believe that togetherness is the cure to suffering? I volunteer to be part of that togetherness. Love is the easiest gift we can give—whether it’s a smile, a message of hope, or a connection to resources that can create change. Volunteering allows us to stomp out stigma and spark healing in our community. I’ve witnessed the power of hope and the healing it brings, which has humbled me greatly. I volunteer to honor those we’ve lost too soon, to give a voice to those who are suffering, and to support my comrades in this fight so they don’t have to do it alone. Lastly, volunteering is FUN! After an outreach event, my cheeks hurt from smiling and laughing, and my soul feels encouraged knowing that even one conversation may inspire someone to seek support.
HOW HAS VOLUNTEERING IMPACTED YOUR LIFE?
Volunteering has touched my heart and renewed my perspective. Pensacola is my home, and I want my community to thrive. Volunteering connects me with incredible people, strengthening my dedication to spreading hope about recovery and promoting emotional well-being. Through volunteering, I’ve gained amazing friends who share my values and goal of helping others stay alive and thrive. It’s a gift to invest in my community, knowing that even small efforts can encourage someone to seek the help they deserve.
Nothing matters more than making a difference, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve.
SARAH SKIPPER: ELEMENTARY TEACHER AT MONTESSORI SCHOOL OF PENSACOLA
Why Do You Volunteer?
I volunteer because I believe in Hope Above Fear. I watched the founder, and my dear friend Stephanie, spend years tirelessly seeking help for her son, Isaiah. I was also present to support her and her two daughters on the day Isaiah took his final breath. I know how important it is for our youth and parents to be aware of Fentanyl, and have a place to go for help, something that Isaiah wasn't offered.
How Has Volunteering Impacted Your Life?
Volunteering has been very eye-opening for me. My chest is heavy as I talk with people about their loss, but also, my heart filled as we discuss hope for the future. Being a part of as many awareness events as possible has played a huge role in my personal healing journey. I believe Hope Above Fear has and will continue to save lives. I am honored to help further their mission.
A Message From Rachel
To whom much is given, much is required. I have been incredibly blessed in my life, and feel a strong call to pay it forward. In 2022, I started attending Hope Above Fear meetings to support my friend, who was hurting in the wake of her son's death. I joined the Board and continue to help because I believe so fervently in the cause--to raise awareness about the dangers of fentanyl, to improve access to care for those with substance abuse and mental healthcare needs, and to combat the stigma that surrounds who the typical drug seeker is.
Why Do You Volunteer?
Volunteering for Hope Above Fear has shown me the strength of grassroots efforts to effect real change. I have been astonished at what this tiny but mighty organization managed to accomplish in less than one year's time. The connections we have made along the way demonstrate that whether people are vocal about it or not (again stigma!), all of us have been affected by mental health crises, substance abuse, or overdose.
How Has Volunteering Impacted Your Life?
I often fear taking chances in the actualization of big ideas-- because it seems too hard, like too much work, or because too many obstacles are in the way. Volunteering for Hope Above Fear has proven to me that with persistence and conviction, we can make a difference in the face of a seemingly insurmountable task. And as long as we persist, if we change even one life, the journey will be worth it.

WHY DO YOU VOLUNTEER?
As someone who has seen firsthand the effects of substance abuse on my loved ones, and witnessed those around me filled with grief after losing someone to similar issues, wishing we could have done more, drug awareness and education is something I am passionately advocating for. Overdose numbers are rising, and the younger generations are being hit the hardest. Today's youth—the future of our community—should feel free to express their individuality in positive ways, without fear of shame or judgment. I believe that by opening up about personal experiences and sharing the proper information and resources, we can help end the stigma and foster a healthier, more supportive community.
HOW HAS VOLUNTEERING IMPACTED YOUR LIFE?
I began volunteering with the feeling of, 'I wish there was something I could do,' and it quickly shifted to the mindset of, 'I need to do this.' It has been an incredible journey of helping others, spreading awareness, and meeting amazing people with valuable experiences that have shown me I am not alone in the challenges I face. Volunteering with Hope Above Fear has given me a whole new perspective on what community means, and I am so grateful for the opportunities I’ve been given and get to share with others.
WHY DO YOU VOLUNTEER?
As a paramedic, I see firsthand the devastating effects of drug use on individuals, families, and especially young people. Responding to overdose calls or witnessing the long-term impact of substance abuse on kids is heartbreaking, but it also motivates me to make a difference beyond the ambulance.
That’s why I volunteer with Hope Above Fear, an organization dedicated to helping kids navigate the challenges of drug use, whether they’re struggling themselves or impacted by someone close to them. My role allows me to educate, mentor, and offer support—giving these kids tools to make healthier choices and rebuild their lives. Volunteering gives me the opportunity to step in before I get called in. It’s a way to be proactive, to empower kids before they’re in a crisis. Seeing them grow stronger and more resilient, knowing I played a part in their journey, is an indescribable reward. Helping kids find hope and possibility fuels my passion, both as a paramedic and as a volunteer. Together, we’re saving lives—not just in emergencies but by showing them someone cares.
HOW HAS VOLUNTEERING IMPACTED YOUR LIFE?
Volunteering to help people work toward reclaiming their lives has been profoundly transformative. It has given me a deeper sense of purpose and connection, as I witness the resilience and strength of the human spirit. Every story of struggle and triumph reminds me of the importance of compassion and understanding. This work has not only allowed me to contribute positively to others but also helped me grow personally. It has taught me the value of persistence and hope, even in the face of immense challenges. Seeing individuals take steps—no matter how small—toward change is humbling and inspiring. This journey has also deepened my gratitude for life and the opportunities I’ve had. It’s shown me the power of community and unconditional support to drive meaningful change. Most importantly, it reminds me that even small acts of kindness can spark profound transformation in others—and in myself.

WHY DO YOU VOLUNTEER?
Volunteering grants me perspective, making me a better and more empathetic person. Through volunteering, I listen more deeply, connect with others, and gain insight into untold stories. I believe the world needs more empathy, and I’m my best self when in service to others. Collaborating toward the well-being of my community energizes me and makes me feel present. Serving others—whether through local animal rescues, wildlife sanctuaries, or now Hope Above Fear—helps me witness the immense need and complex issues facing our society. Volunteering reminds me that even small actions can soften suffering and save lives. I am honored to join Hope Above Fear as a board member, inspired by the impact Stephanie Shepard and the organization have already made. Change and true advocacy often stem from trauma, grief, and pain. Showing up for others in moments of vulnerability allows us to discover our own capacity for compassion. I am eager to spread awareness about the dangers of fentanyl poisoning in Escambia County and advocate for mental well-being and accessible treatment for vulnerable populations. Together, we can create a safer, generative community by turning pain into action and hope.
HOW HAS VOLUNTEERING IMPACTED YOUR LIFE?
Volunteering immerses me in experiences and connections I wouldn’t otherwise have. Through my work with Hope Above Fear, I’ve learned how education saves lives and gained a deeper understanding of the world through the stories I hear. Volunteering enhances my personal and spiritual well-being, allowing me to participate in something bigger than myself. It connects me to others on a deeper level and helps me better understand my own experiences and vulnerabilities. I’ve seen firsthand how voice and story empower individuals and bridge differences. These lessons have shaped my teaching as a professor at the University of West Florida. I integrate my volunteer experiences with Hope Above Fear and the Escambia County Animal Shelter into my ENC 1102 Public Writing class and first-year composition program as examples of impactful community engagement. I look forward to continuing to make a difference in the Pensacola community through my volunteer efforts with Hope Above Fear.
WHY DO YOU VOLUNTEER?
I have been a high school art teacher and coach in Escambia County for several years. During this time, I’ve seen and heard firsthand the struggles teens face and how trauma and addiction shape their lives. These challenges often extend beyond what can be addressed within the school walls. I choose to volunteer because it allows me to support teens in ways that extend far beyond the classroom. I believe one of the most important things we can do as a community is to advocate for and uplift our youth, providing them with the resources and encouragement they need to thrive.
HOW HAS VOLUNTEERING IMPACTED YOUR LIFE?
Volunteering is about building community and creating meaningful connections. Through both teaching and volunteering, I’ve learned that the relationships we form with our youth are what shape the future of our community. Seeing someone overcome an obstacle that once held them back is incredibly rewarding—not just for them, but for everyone who supports them along the way. Watching their confidence grow inspires me to continue advocating for change. Being part of a movement that fosters belonging and connection reminds me of the power we have to influence positive change, not only in individual lives but across our entire community.
JEFFREY WHITEHURST: TEACHER AT ESCAMBIA COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL
WHY DO YOU VOLUNTEER?
After nearly 15 years in the classroom, I’ve learned that a teacher’s role extends far beyond academics. Working primarily in low-income, urban areas, I’ve witnessed firsthand how many of my students needed support that went beyond the walls of a school. I’ve listened to countless stories and known hundreds of kids whose lives have been impacted by drug abuse. I realized that if I truly wanted to make a difference, I had to go beyond the classroom and into the community—because that’s where the root of most issues begins. Meeting students where they are, rather than where we expect them to be, became my mission.
Through Hope Above Fear, I can reach more young people, providing them with the tools, knowledge, and encouragement to build happier, healthier lives—free from the burdens that so many carry today.
HOW HAS VOLUNTEERING IMPACTED YOUR LIFE?
I always tell people that I teach because I’m selfish—I love the moment when a student’s “lightbulb” finally goes off. There’s no greater feeling than knowing you’ve helped someone understand something new, making their world just a little bit bigger.
Volunteering has allowed me to witness those “lightbulb” moments in an entirely new way. The knowledge Hope Above Fear shares doesn’t just change lives—it can save them. That realization has been deeply humbling and motivating.
My mom was a civil servant for most of my life, and her dedication to helping others built a strong foundation for my own commitment to making a difference. She taught me that for a community to thrive, every member has to do their part. Through Hope Above Fear, I’ve been given an incredible opportunity to do my part—helping to build a stronger, safer, and more hopeful future for our youth.
