A MESSAGE FROM STEPHEN
It is with great humility and resolve that I write to you today on behalf of Hope Above Fear. As we embark on this journey to combat substance abuse and extend support to adolescents and families in need, your unwavering commitment and generosity are invaluable pillars of strength for our organization. Together, we can make a profound impact and ensure that no family has to endure the pain of losing a loved one to substance abuse. Let us stand united in our commitment to creating a brighter future for our youth.
WHY DO YOU VOLUNTEER?
I volunteer because it's ingrained in me from my upbringing and the values my parents instilled in me. My parents encouraged me to be involved in community service, teaching me to give back and make a difference. I also want to set a positive example for my own children, teaching them the importance of compassion and making a difference in the world. Volunteering allows me to see the direct impact of my efforts and brings me fulfillment in knowing that I'm making a positive difference in my community.
HOW HAS VOLUNTEERING IMPACTED YOUR LIFE?
Volunteering has had a profound impact on my life, both personally and professionally. In my role as Chief Advancement Officer for The Arc Gateway, I get to contribute to meaningful causes and help individuals with disabilities lead fulfilling lives. Through my involvement with other organizations, such as Hope Above Fear and Food Raising Friends, I've gained valuable skills in leadership and teamwork. Personally, volunteering has allowed me to form deep connections with my community, forging friendships and mentorships.
To whom much is given, much is required. I have been incredibly blessed in my life, and feel a strong call to pay it forward. I joined the Board and continue to help because I believe so fervently in the cause--to raise awareness about the dangers of fentanyl, to improve access to care for those with substance abuse and mental healthcare needs, and to combat the stigma that surrounds who the typical drug seeker is.
WHY DO YOU VOLUNTEER?
Volunteering for Hope Above Fear has shown me the strength of grassroots efforts to effect real change. I have been astonished at what this tiny but mighty organization has done in less than one year's time. The connections we have made along the way demonstrate that whether people are vocal about it or not (again stigma!), all of us have been affected by mental health crises, substance abuse, or overdose.
HOW HAS VOLUNTEERING IMPACTED YOUR LIFE?
I often fear taking chances in the actualization of big ideas-- because it seems too hard, like too much work, or because too many obstacles are in the way. Volunteering for Hope Above Fear has proven to me that with persistence and conviction, we can make a difference in the face of a seemingly insurmountable task. And as long as we persist, if we change even one life, the journey will be worth it.
Safeguarding and nurturing the well-being of our youth plays a pivotal role in fostering a resilient community. Through the dedicated efforts of Hope Above Fear, we are actively combating one of the most pressing threats to our young population – the peril of fentanyl and substance abuse. Our organization focuses on creating awareness about the risks associated with these substances while extending crucial support to youths and families grappling with the impact. It is both an honor and a privilege to contribute to this noble cause.
WHY DO YOU VOLUNTEER?
Community plays a crucial role for everyone. In recent years, I've come to understand that a thriving community can effectively combat the challenges posed by addiction. Hope Above Fear consistently demonstrates to me that tangible and positive change can occur right here in our local community. I volunteer with the organization because I am committed to playing a role in enhancing our community and making it better than it was yesterday. Emerging from the challenges of quarantine, we've witnessed an upswing in mental health concerns and substance abuse, impacting us all. It's a source of great pride for me to be a part of a team that remains steadfast in its focus on finding solutions and providing support for our community. Together, we strive to address these issues and contribute to the well-being of those around us.
HOW HAS VOLUNTEERING IMPACTED YOUR LIFE?
Volunteering is a fulfilling exchange, where as you fill another's cup, yours is replenished as well. The connections I've forged while volunteering, be it in community theatre projects or through my involvement with Hope Above Fear, have evolved into cherished relationships with esteemed colleagues and friends. These individuals have seamlessly become integral parts of my community, offering genuine support and camaraderie. Indeed, within this network, I discover authentic encouragement and a reminder that, above all, community is paramount.
A MESSAGE FROM MARCUS
“Has anyone told you that they love you yet today? Hey! Guess what? I love you!
As someone who has suffered, struggled, and survived addiction for over 35 years, my goal is to ensure that every soul I encounter knows that they are seen, valued, and loved. Adolescence is hard, especially in this age of excessive technology. When I started using at 15, if I had someone who could have answered my questions to satisfy my curiosity, my journey might have been different. With that being said, I wouldn't have changed anything because "Our mess is our message." If I can make a difference in just one teenager's life and prevent them from experiencing what I have, then my goal has been achieved.“
WHY I VOLUNTEER
Gandhi said, "The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others." And it's so true! When we focus on remedying the issues of others who are less fortunate than us, our entire perspective on life changes. So many are suffering with the feeling of abandonment and loneliness. I volunteer because I desire to ease the world's suffering by being present with others in their time of need and with one "I love you!" at a time. If not me, then who? If not now, then when?
HOW HAS VOLUNTEERING IMPACTED YOUR LIFE?
Gratitude! Gratitude! Gratitude!
Through volunteering and serving others, I am reminded of how great my life is and how good I have it. Assisting others who are going through situations far worse than anything I could ever imagine allows me to see how wonderful my life actually is, regardless of the hardships I may be facing. Serving others shifts the focus from a poverty mindset of what I may lack to an abundance of gratitude for what my family and I do have.
